The Dragons split a pair of close road contests last weekend, beating Shelbyville 66-64 and falling to Connersville 50-49. The Dragons now sit at 12-7 with just three games left. As the season as rolled along, interestingly, none of the Dragons primary ball handlers are the most efficient scorer on the team. That title goes to the 6'4" center Kyle King who is shooting over 60% from the field thanks to a hot streak of shooting over the last month. Matthew True continues to lead the way behind the 3-point arc. Maximum Gizzi has past Dawson Eastes to become the second most reliable shooter from deep. The Dragons appear to be hitting their stride offensively. New Palestine has seven players with an above average offensive rating(>100) including their two guards who both have astronomical ratings above 120. Matthew True leads the team in true shooting percentage with over 63%. The Dragons have three games remaining including a date tonight with arch rival Mt. Vernon. New Palestine must win tonight and hope for a Delta loss to secure a piece of the HHC Crown.

The Dragons' season keeps rolling as they are currently 11-6 on the year with five games left to play. Through their 17th game, Gizzi is leading the way with 17.1 ppg. True trails him with 15.3. Eastes is third with 12.9. Eastes has been a tremendous rebounder, leading the team with 6.6 rpg. Generally, the same efficiency ratings have rang true. Matthew True has held the highest offensive rating for much of the season, followed by Gizzi and Eastes and King. Seniors Jack Walker, Dylan Romine and Jacob Hockett also boast solid ratings. The Dragons face a very winnable schedule in the last stretch of their season. With five games left, it seems likely the Dragons match or surpass their 15 win season from a year ago.
BAM Analytics is finally ramping up, as is the 2018-19 Dragons Basketball season. At the halfway mark of the season, the Dragons sit at 7-4, nearly on pace to match their 15-10 record from a year ago. Prepping the stat sheet prior to the Dragons tilt with Mooresville on January 14. Through the first half of the season senior shooting guard Matthew True remains the most efficient player on the floor with a 120 offensive rating. He is trailed by Gizzi(116) and Eastes(114.5). Interestingly, Jacob Hockett holds the fourth highest offensive rating on the team, despite playing only 31 minutes. Maxen Hook has the worst efficiency rating and highest turnover rate of all players with significant minutes. Maximums Gizzi leads the team by a wide margin in FGA, AST, FTA and points. Dylan Romine has been among the most effective scorers, shooting a team best 88.2% at the free-throw line and 42.1% from 3-point range. Dawson Eastes is also having a solid season as he is shooting 48.1% from the field and leads the team with 78 total rebounds. Jack Walker surprisingly leads the team, shooting 61.5% from the field.
Finally UnderwayBAM Analytics officially started this past weekend when the New Palestine boy's basketball team began their season @ Greenfield-Central on Friday night and @ Westfield Saturday Night. The Dragons split on the weekend, after they defeated conference foe GC 75-65 on Friday and lost to Westfield 73-63 the following night. Against Greenfield, junior guard Maximus Gizzi led the team with 27 points. The following night, junior forward Dawson Eastes led the squad with 29 points and 14 rebounds in the loss against Westfield. The Dragons warm up before their clash with Westfield. These are the averages through the first weekend of the season. It is too early to make any conclusions about a players efficiency, given its only been two games. Regardless, Gizzi and Eastes have been the Dragons best players through two games. True has been the most efficient plater on offense, followed by Gizzi, Eastes and Roudebush. Hook, King and Walker have been the least efficient. Gizzi accounts for nearly 29% of the Dragons assists on the year. Walker has a staggering 91.4% turnover rate. Hook and Romine also have relatively at around 36% and 38% respectively. True leads the team in true-shooting % with nearly 64%.
BAM Analytics is in a bit of a holding pattern at the moment. Our project, primarily focused on advanced analytics with the boys basketball team, is hard to work on right now considering it isn't basketball season. However, we are practicing the system and learning how to efficiently and effectively take the stats. The stats are taken for each lineup. The different colored columns represent which statistics will be taken by which person. We will track the minutes played of each lineup also. After the game by game stats are taken, we will enter them into a spreadsheet that will automatically update totals and keep track of shooting percentage throughout the year. After these generic stats are tallied, we will actually use the BAM system to calculate the advanced analytics. With the boys season still over a month away, we plan on keeping some statistics for the girls team in the meantime; to help their program, as well as giving ourselves additional practice taking stats.
BAM Analytics is an advanced analytics program used to take an in-depth look at basketball statistics. The purpose of BAM is to help the New Palestine basketball team be as efficient and successful as possible.
BAM is a legacy project started last year by Bryson Cooper and Elijah Domogala. Last year, they kept stats and provided analytics for the Dragons basketball team and greatly improved their win record and efficiency. We plan to use the same analytics program and spreadsheet system that Cooper and Domogala came up with last year. They already created tutorial videos for us to learn exactly how they kept and tracked the statistics. This year, Caleb Stirm and I plan to continue the BAM program and improve upon it. We plan to provide Coach Whitaker with scouting reports for each of the Dragons conference opponents, prior to the beginning of the season. We have already been granted access to last seasons basketball games on Hudl. Until the season starts, we are spending most of our time scouting opponents. We have also contacted the statistician for the Indiana Pacers and plan to learn more about how analytics are kept at the pro level. |
